PROVIDING RESILIENCE MEASURES FOR EMPLOYERS AGAINST COVID-19
The COVID-19 Resilience Toolkit provides a set of resources for employers’ and business membership organizations and enterprises to help build resilience to risks and vulnerabilities posed by the pandemic and support a build back better recovery.
COVID-19 is a global pandemic, unparalleled in history in terms of its global reach and impact. COVID-19 is a multi-layered health, economic and social crisis requiring responses from all sections of our society. The effects of the pandemic will be protracted with periodic spikes in the crisis throughout 2020 and into 2021.
The crisis will have the following three stages.
- Immediate emergency. The focus here is on the health infrastructure, and the aim is to minimize the spread of the virus and cushion the economic impact that many are feeling.
- Economic recession deepens. Many enterprises will not survive, and unemployment will continue to rise. Risks include rising poverty and social unrest.
- A post COVID-19 environment. This will be the point of recovery and the emergence of a new (and unplanned) future.
The difficulty is in recognizing when each stage begins and ends. There are many scenarios for how this crisis will play out.
We must aim to build back better so that our new systems are safer, fairer and more sustainable than those that allowed this crisis to happen, and more effective in cushioning the consequences of future crises on people around the globe.
